You Come for the Movement... You Stay for the People.
Nobody joins a movement class for the friendships.
You show up because your back hurts. Or your doctor scared you. Or you’re tired of feeling stiff every morning.
You’re there for your body. That’s the deal.
But then something weird happens.
You start recognizing faces. Someone asks how your week was. You learn that Linda’s grandson just graduated and Tom’s dealing with the same shoulder thing you are. You laugh at the same struggle moments. You celebrate when someone finally nails that stretch they’ve been working on.
Before you know it, you’re not just showing up for your hips anymore.
You’re showing up because these people get it. They’re in the same boat. Nobody’s trying to impress anyone. Nobody’s competing. You’re all just trying to feel better and move easier.
Here’s what I’ve learned after years of teaching: the movement fixes your body, but the community fixes something else entirely.
It reminds you that you’re not alone in this aging thing. That getting older doesn’t mean getting invisible. That there’s still laughter and growth and connection ahead.
The exercise is what brings you in.
The people are what keep you coming back.
Your action step: Next class you take, whether it’s at the studio or online, introduce yourself to one person. Just one. Ask them why they showed up today.
You probably be surprised what happens next.
That’s the kind of thing we’re building at RiversZen, one introduction at a time.

Best message ever. And so true. I have been doing it in my classes here In Lacey as well as Riverszen (introducing myself to people). And I have gained walking buddies as well as invitations to social gatherings I otherwise would not have. I love that my classes here are only a 15 minute walk from home so I can do more in person.
