The Two-Word Habit That Can Change Your Body and Your Mood
How a simple “thank you” can boost your mood and your health
Imagine if saying “thanks” could boost your mood more than a hot shower and a good stretch. Well, it can.
I used to grumble about my creaky knees after a long walk. Then one day, instead of complaining, I paused and said, “Thanks for holding me up and getting me through that.” Just like that, my whole mindset shifted. I wasn’t just walking. I was walking with gratitude.
Gratitude isn’t fluff. It’s powerful. It calms your nervous system, lowers stress, improves sleep, and even makes movement feel easier. It’s like giving your brain and body a big ol’ hug.
When you start appreciating your strong legs, your steady balance, or even the breath you just took, life feels a little brighter. And you start wanting to take care of yourself more.
We’ve seen it time and again. Gratitude turns cranky into calm, stiff into steady, tired into energized.
Try this tonight: Before bed, thank one part of your body for showing up today. Something simple like, “Thanks, hands, for gripping the steering wheel safely” or “Thanks, lungs, for helping me through that walk.” It’s small, but it lifts you up in big ways.
You’ll be surprised what a little thank-you can do.
I should have written this. I thank my body all the time for what it can do after 70+ years of working so hard for me. Every time I finish mowing the lawn or hauling wheelbarrows full of bark. I know younger people who can't keep up ----- and older people who can. So grateful for the body I have.
