Lungs Shrink As You Age?
Many actually believe that...
Your Lungs Don’t Shrink From Aging. They Shrink From Not Being Used.
“Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor.” Thich Nhat Hanh
Your breath isn’t just for staying alive.
It’s for staying present.
Staying grounded.
Staying healthy.
Your lungs don’t shrink because you’re getting older.
They shrink because you stop using them fully.
Shallow breathing.
Sitting all day.
Never taking a full, deep breath unless you’re sighing in frustration.
That’s what weakens your lungs.
Not your age.
I’m 72.
My lung capacity is better now than it was at 50.
Why?
Because I breathe intentionally.
Every single day.
In Qigong, every movement follows the breath.
Inhale, exhale, move with purpose.
It’s not just exercise.
It’s training your lungs to do what they were designed to do - fill completely, empty completely, keep you oxygenated and alive.
Deep breathing isn’t some wellness trend. It’s biology.
Your body needs oxygen.
Your brain needs oxygen.
Your muscles need oxygen.
When you breathe shallow, you’re starving yourself at a cellular level.
When you breathe deep and full, everything works better.
Your breath is your anchor when emotions rise.
And it’s your medicine when your body needs strength.
Use your lungs. Challenge them. Don’t let them shrink from neglect.
Do you take full, deep breaths throughout your day? Or do you only notice your breathing when you’re stressed or out of breath?
Tell me. What’s your relationship with your own breath?
