Peggy said this during class the other day:
“Distance isn’t our goal. It’s cool, but it’s not our goal. Our goal is ease. Ease of motion.”
I love the “it’s cool” part.
Because it is.
Touch your toes when you couldn’t before? Cool.
Reach farther behind your back? Cool.
Get your butt closer to your heels? Cool.
We’re not going to pretend progress doesn’t feel good. But somewhere along the way, we started treating distance as the point.
How far can you bend?
How deep can you squat?
How much can you stretch?
Can you make yourself look like the person in the picture?
Peggy has a different question.
Is it getting easier to move?
That’s a hell of a lot more interesting to me.
I don’t particularly care whether you can put your palms on the floor.
I care whether getting your socks on is easier.
Whether getting out of the car is easier.
Whether you reach down to pick something up without having to think about the whole damn production first.
A few more inches?
Cool.
An easier life in your own body?
That’s what we’re after.
