launched a pedometer called the manpo-kei. The name literally translates to ten thousand steps meter. They chose the number because it was round, memorable, and the Japanese character for ten thousand looks vaguely like a person walking. There was no research behind it. No clinical trials. No epidemiologist who sat down and determined that ten thousand was the threshold between health and decline.

A clock company picked a number that sounded good and the entire global wellness industry adopted it as gospel for sixty years.

Harvard epidemiologist I-Min Lee put it plainly. There were no actual studies that had looked at ten thousand steps when the pedometer launched. It was a made up number in the sense that ten thousand sounds good and is easy to remember.

Here is what the actual research shows.

Meaningful health benefits start at four thousand steps a day. A 2023 meta-analysis of seventeen studies covering more than two hundred and twenty six thousand people found that four thousand daily steps was enough to significantly lower the risk of early death, heart disease, and dementia. A 2021 cohort study found that people who hit seven thousand steps per day experienced dramatically lower mortality rates than those who did not.

Every additional thousand steps you take links to roughly fifteen percent lower risk of dying early. The benefit does not start at ten thousand. It starts the moment you get off the couch.

One thousand steps is better than zero. Two thousand is better than one. The curve is steep at the bottom which means the people who need this most — the ones who are barely moving right now — have the most to gain from the smallest change.

The wellness industry does not tell you that. The industry needs you chasing the number. Chasing the number sells the watch, the app, the program, the accountability group, the coaching package designed to help you hit the goal they invented to sell you the product.

Your body does not know what ten thousand means. It knows the difference between moving and not moving. It knows the difference between a walk around the block and an afternoon on the couch. It registers every step you take and responds accordingly without consulting anyone’s app.

Walk the amount you will actually repeat tomorrow. And the day after. That is the number that matters. Not the one a Japanese clock company chose because it looked like a person walking.

Start where you are. Add a little more when you can. Your body will do the rest.

According to the “Experts” You Are Doing Everything Wrong

You are eating the wrong Peggy, my wife, eats pescatarian. And I’m about to tell you something that will surprise a lot of people who follow my work.

Your plant-based diet can absolutely work.

Not in theory. Not with caveats. Not with an asterisk and a footnote about what you’re missing. Your decision to eat vegan or vegetarian deserves respect, and today that’s exactly what I’m here to give it.

Let’s set one thing aside before we go further. I’m not here to argue which eating style does more harm to the planet. I’m not here to debate which approach kills more animals. Those are real conversations worth having. But not today. Today is about your body, your decision, and your health.

I reversed type 2 diabetes 19 years ago. Lost 98 pounds. Avoided multiple surgeries doctors said were inevitable. I did it with real food and movement. Not a pill. Not a program. Not a guru’s protocol.

Every single one of those principles applies to you.

The foundation of health has never been about choosing the right tribe. Carnivore. Vegan. Keto. Paleo. Pescatarian. The food wars make great content and sell a lot of books, but they obscure the one truth that every honest person on every side already knows.

Real food wins. Processed food loses. That’s it.

A plate of vegetables pulled from the ground, legumes cooked from dry, nuts and seeds in their whole form, fruit picked ripe. That’s real food. Your body knows exactly what to do with it. It recognizes every molecule. It’s been doing this for thousands of years.

The problem isn’t plant-based eating. The problem is what the food industry did to it.

Walk into any grocery store and count the products screaming “plant-based” on the label. Fake burgers with ingredient lists longer than a pharmaceutical insert. Vegan cheese that would confuse a chemistry lab. Plant-based ice cream loaded with seed oils, gums, and sweeteners your grandmother wouldn’t recognize.

The food industry saw your values and built a product line around them. They took your decision to eat clean and sold you processed food with a green label.

That’s not plant-based eating. That’s marketing wearing a costume.

A vegetarian who eats whole foods, cooks from scratch, and knows where their food comes from is eating closer to how humans ate for centuries than someone on any diet who lives on packaged products. I don’t care what the packaging says. I care what’s in it.

Now let’s talk about the one thing every plant-based eater hears about until they’re tired of hearing it.

Protein.

Yes, you need it. Yes, it matters. Yes, it takes more attention on a plant-based diet than it does when you’re eating animal products. That’s just honest. A steak is a complete protein. Getting all your essential amino acids from plants requires a little more awareness.

But “requires more awareness” is not the same as “impossible.” It’s not even close.

Lentils. Chickpeas. Black beans. Quinoa. Hemp seeds. Tempeh. Whole soy. These aren’t exotic superfoods you need to order from a specialty website. They’re foods that cultures around the world have thrived on for generations. Combine your grains with your legumes and you’ve got a complete amino acid profile without overthinking it. Rice and beans isn’t a trend. It’s one of the oldest nutritional partnerships on the planet.

The protein panic is overblown for most people. Especially if you’re eating enough whole food and you’re not training for a bodybuilding stage. Your muscles, your bones, your immune system. All of it can be fed on plants. You just have to actually eat the plants. The real ones. Not the ones that come in a box with a barcode and a health claim.

Your lifestyle and mine share the same foundation.

I eat carnivore because real animal food works for my body. You eat plant-based because real plant food works for yours. We’re not on opposite sides. We’re standing on the same ground. The ground that says your body already knows what to do if you stop confusing it with industrial products pretending to be food.

The wellness industry wants you to believe this is complicated. They want you buying supplements for deficiencies they manufactured to sell you the solution. They want you tracking macros and micronutrients until eating feels like a science experiment. They want you anxious about your choices so you’ll keep buying their answers.

Stop.

If you’re eating real, whole plant foods. If you’re cooking. If you’re paying attention to getting enough protein through actual food and not processed protein bars. If you’re moving your body. If you’re sleeping.

You’re doing the work.

That’s the same message I give everyone who reads this publication, regardless of what’s on their plate. Your body responds to real food and real movement. The label on your eating style matters a lot less than the quality of what you’re actually putting in your mouth.

Peggy doesn’t eat the way I eat. She never has. We sit at the same table, we eat different foods, and we’ve both built health that doctors didn’t predict we’d have at our age. She walked through cancer treatment this year without crumbling, and she didn’t do it because of my diet. She did it because of hers. The one she chose, stayed consistent with, and never needed anyone’s permission to follow.

Neither do you.

You don’t need a carnivore to validate your choice. But you’ve got one. Eat real food. Cook it yourself. Move your body. Ignore anyone who tells you your plate is wrong when your body is proving them right.

You chose this. Now own it.

The 8-Hour Sleep Rule Is Not What You Think

Someone decided you need eight hours of sleep and Every doctor’s checklist. Every wellness influencer’s list of non-negotiables. Eight hours. Every night. No exceptions.

Your body never got that memo. And the research is more interesting than the headline.

Sleep does not work in hours. It works in cycles. Each cycle runs roughly ninety minutes and moves through distinct stages — light sleep, deep sleep, and REM. Your body needs to complete enough of those cycles to do the repair work that keeps you functional, healthy, and sharp. The total hours matter less than what happens inside them.

Here is what the research actually shows. Adults who sleep between six and a half and seven and a half hours of genuinely restorative sleep often outperform people who spend eight or nine hours in bed cycling in and out of light sleep without ever reaching the deeper stages. The number on the clock is not the measure. The quality of what happens while the clock is running is.

Deep sleep is where your body does its most important physical work. Tissue repair. Bone and muscle rebuilding. Immune function. Hormone regulation. If you are not reaching deep sleep consistently your body is not recovering from the day regardless of how many hours you logged. You can spend nine hours in bed and wake up exhausted because you never went deep enough to matter.

REM sleep is where your brain does its work. Memory consolidation. Emotional processing. Cognitive function. The mental clarity that makes the difference between a sharp focused day and one where everything feels slightly off. Alcohol destroys REM sleep even in small amounts. So does chronic stress. So does the screen you look at for an hour before you close your eyes.

The wellness industry sells you eight hours because eight hours is a simple message that requires no explanation. Track your hours. Hit the number. Check the box.

What it does not tell you is that two drinks of wine before bed will gut your REM cycle even if you sleep nine hours. That chronic elevated cortisol from unmanaged stress keeps you in light sleep all night regardless of when you got into bed. That the food you eat in the evening affects the quality of the sleep you get at night in ways that have nothing to do with how tired you feel when you lie down.

I do not count sleep hours. I go to bed when my body is tired and I wake up when it is done. Nineteen years of real food, daily movement, and no alcohol have produced sleep that restores in fewer hours than the rule demands because the cycles are clean. Nothing is sabotaging them from the inside.

That is the sleep conversation nobody is having. Not how many hours. What is destroying the quality of the hours you already have.

Cut the alcohol. Protect the evening. Move your body during the day so it has something to recover from at night. Eat real food that gives your body something worth repairing. Manage the stress that keeps your cortisol elevated while you are trying to rest.

Do those things and the hours take care of themselves.

Stop watching the clock. Start protecting the cycles.

That is the sleep advice the wellness industry cannot sell you because it does not require a product.

They Told You a Glass of Wine Was Good for You. A glass of red wine with dinner. Good for the heart. Full of antioxidants. The French do it. The Mediterraneans do it. Relax.

It was a lie. Not a nuanced misunderstanding. Not science that has evolved. A lie built on broken research that the people selling alcohol had every reason to keep alive and the medical establishment never looked at hard enough to question.

Stanford looked at it.

Dr. Andrew Huberman is a neuroscientist and professor at Stanford School of Medicine. He went through the research on moderate drinking the way someone goes through a crime scene — methodically, without sentiment, following the evidence wherever it led.

What he found should make you put down the glass.

The studies that told you moderate drinking was good for your heart had a fundamental flaw. The control groups were wrong. Researchers were comparing moderate drinkers to people who had already stopped drinking — people who had often stopped because they were sick. Sick people versus less sick people. Not drinkers versus true non-drinkers. The entire foundation of the heart healthy drinking narrative was built on that comparison.

When Stanford researchers analyzed all of those previous papers and corrected for proper controls the cardiovascular benefit disappeared entirely. Every study. Without exception. Zero is better than any. That is not Huberman’s opinion. That is what the meta-analysis of the meta-analyses found when the science was done correctly.

The alcohol industry knew the research was flawed. They funded studies, shaped narratives, and spent decades making sure the moderate drinking story stayed alive because the moderate drinking story is worth billions of dollars a year. The same playbook the tobacco industry ran for twenty years before the truth caught up with them.

The truth has now caught up with alcohol.

Here is what the science actually shows. Alcohol is a toxin. It is both water and fat soluble which means it penetrates every cell in your body — your brain, your liver, your gut, your hormonal system — and it damages all of them. There is no dose at which it provides net benefit. None.

Even one to two drinks per day causes measurable thinning of the neocortex. Your brain is literally losing neurons at the level most people consider completely harmless. The damage scales with consumption — the more you drink the more gray matter you lose. Not just heavy drinkers. Everyone who drinks regularly.

Alcohol increases the conversion of testosterone to estrogen in both men and women. It raises baseline cortisol — the stress hormone — which means the drink you use to unwind is chemically increasing your stress load even as it makes you feel temporarily relaxed. It disrupts sleep architecture even in small amounts. You may fall asleep faster but you will not sleep as deeply or restore as fully.

And then there is cancer. For every ten grams of alcohol consumed daily there is a four to thirteen percent increase in cancer risk. One drink per day carries a cancer risk comparable to smoking multiple cigarettes. Alcohol is a Group 1 carcinogen — the same category as tobacco and asbestos. That classification did not make the evening news. The wine commercials did.

I reversed type 2 diabetes at 55. Lost 98 pounds. Avoided seven surgeries. Have taken no medications in nineteen years. Peggy taught fitness classes through six rounds of chemotherapy and was declared cancer free after session three. Neither of those outcomes happened in a body that was absorbing a toxin every evening and calling it health.

Peggy and I quietly stopped drinking a few years ago. No decision. No conversation. No dramatic moment. Our bodies simply stopped asking for it. When you treat your body well enough for long enough it stops reaching for things that work against everything you are building. The craving just disappeared.

I understand now why it disappeared. Our bodies knew something the wine industry spent decades trying to hide.

Zero is better than any.

Not my data. Stanford’s data. The analysis of the analysis. The science done correctly after decades of science done wrong.

The glass of red wine with dinner was never medicine. It was a story someone profitable told you and a culture that liked drinking was happy to believe.

Now you know what the research actually says.

What you do with that is your decision.

Every Expert Has a System. modesty. That is the most important thing I can tell you about the last nineteen years of our life. There is no secret. There is no protocol hidden behind the paid subscription, no proprietary system I have been holding back, no moment where I reveal the thing that actually made the difference.

The thing that made the difference is the same thing it has always been. I just kept doing it.

Every day.

That is the philosophy. Everything else is just the details of how two people in their seventies show up for their bodies every single morning regardless of how they feel, what is happening in their lives, or what the world is telling them they should be doing instead.

Peggy went through four rounds of chemotherapy last year. She kept teaching classes through every single session. Not because she was performing toughness for anyone watching. Because the daily practice is not something you do when conditions are perfect. It is something you do because conditions are never perfect and your body needs it anyway.

That is what nineteen years of daily practice actually looks like. Not inspiration. Not motivation. Not a new discovery that reignited the commitment. Just the quiet, unremarkable, enormously powerful act of showing up again.

What a day actually looks like — the food, the movement, the music, the sleep, and the emotional reality of keeping the practice going through something like Peggy’s diagnosis — that is what members read next. This is exactly the kind of inside access your membership unlocks every Sunday. If you are not yet a member, today is a good day to change that.

I got it back anyway.

Type 2 diabetes. Ninety eight extra pounds. Seven surgeries on the schedule. A body that had been neglected for decades and a medical system with a very organized plan for managing what was left of it.

Not one person in that system suggested I might be able to reverse any of it.

Nineteen years later I take no medications. The surgeries never happened. I teach movement classes daily at 72 and I feel better than I did the day I sat in that doctor’s office and listened to what the rest of my life was supposed to look like.

The system called what was happening to me aging. They called it normal. They called it inevitable.

Harvard disagrees.

Dr. David Sinclair is a professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School and one of the world’s leading researchers on why we age.

He has spent decades studying the biology of aging and arrived at a conclusion that the medical establishment has been slow to accept.

Aging is not inevitable. It is a disease. And diseases can be treated.

Sinclair’s argument is precise.

The medical definition of a disease is a progressive loss of function that leads to pathology and death.

Aging meets every criterion.

The only reason it is not classified as a disease is arbitrary — more than fifty percent of the population experiences it, so the system put it in a different category.

Not because the biology is different. Because the number is too large to call it rare.

Think about what that means. The system decided aging was not a disease worth treating because too many people have it.

And then it built an entire infrastructure around managing the symptoms of something it refused to address at the root.

Sinclair calls aging the root cause of eighty to ninety percent of heart disease and Alzheimer’s.

The system spends billions treating those downstream diseases while ignoring the cause that drives all of them. Treating the branches. Never the root.

That is not an accident. Treating inevitable decline is an enormously profitable business. Preventing it is not.

At the center of Sinclair’s research is the epigenome — the system that regulates which genes are turned on or off inside every cell.

Over time that regulation degrades. Cells begin to forget their identity. They lose function. The result is what we call aging — the slowing, the fatigue, the memory loss, the creaking joints — all of it driven not by time itself but by the accumulated degradation of a regulatory system that can be influenced, slowed, and in some cases reversed.

Your body is not a clock running down.

It is a system responding to information.

And the information you give it every single day either accelerates that degradation or slows it.

Movement. Real food. Sleep. Stress management. Not complicated. Not proprietary. Not a protocol you need an expert to decode.

The same things humans have always needed. The same things the wellness industry keeps repackaging and reselling as if they were new discoveries.

Peggy was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma seven months ago. Large tumor. Six rounds of chemotherapy.

Her oncologist was surprised by how well her body handled treatment. We were not.

Seventeen years of daily movement and real food had built a body with reserves the system did not expect. The fortress held because we built it before we needed it.

That is not luck. That is a regulatory system that had been given good information consistently for nearly two decades.

Sinclair said recently that he is feeling better in his fifties than he did in his thirties.

He does not accept that getting slower, more tired, and losing memory is something that has to happen to everyone.

He has seen too much evidence to the contrary.

I have lived too much evidence to the contrary.

The system will keep calling it aging. Keep calling it normal. Keep managing the symptoms of something it refuses to treat at the root because the root is where the money is not.

You do not have to accept that arrangement.

Your body is not declining on a fixed schedule. It is responding to what you do today. What you eat today. How you move today. How you sleep tonight.

The trajectory is not fixed. The chapter has not been written.

Nineteen years of evidence tells me so.

And now Harvard is saying the same thing.

They Lowered the Cholesterol. The data sat buried for forty years.

In 1966, researchers in Sydney put 458 men who had already survived a heart attack into a trial. Half switched their saturated fat for safflower oil, loaded with omega-6 linoleic acid. The other half ate whatever they wanted.

The safflower oil group’s cholesterol dropped. Exactly the way the textbooks said it should.

Then more of them died.

Not from one thing. From everything. Heart disease. Cardiovascular events. All causes combined. The group doing what they were told had a 62 percent higher risk of dying from any cause and a 70 percent higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease than the group that changed nothing.

When the results were published in 1978, the paper reported that overall mortality was higher in the intervention group. But it never broke down the cardiovascular numbers. The one piece of data that would have told the medical world this advice was killing people just did not appear. It took until 2013 for researchers to recover the original dataset, run the analysis the investigators had planned from the beginning, and publish what the numbers actually said.

Forty years. The data sat there for forty years.

During those forty years, every doctor, every dietitian, every government panel kept telling you to swap your butter for vegetable oil. They built food pyramids on it. They reformulated every processed food on the shelf around it. They put the entire Western world on a diet of industrial seed oil and called it prevention.

Nobody in that chain ever stopped to ask what happens when you flood a human body with linoleic acid. It oxidizes easily. It drives inflammation at the cellular level. Cholesterol exists for a reason. It repairs damaged cell membranes. It builds the hormones your body cannot function without. Lowering it by swapping in an oil that creates oxidative damage is not a health intervention. It is a chemical trade your body never agreed to.

A lower number on a blood panel looked like success. The oxidative damage underneath told a different story.

I reversed type 2 diabetes nineteen years ago. My doctor wanted me on medication for the rest of my life. I said no. I changed what I ate and how I moved and every marker they said would never change without a prescription changed without one. I have not taken a single medication since.

I did not know about the Sydney Diet Heart Study then. But I knew something was wrong with the advice. Because the advice never worked. And the people giving it never asked why.

This is not an anomaly. It is not an outlier. It is a randomized controlled trial that produced a clear result the medical establishment did not want to hear. So the data sat in a drawer for four decades while the guideline it contradicted was carved into every dietary recommendation on the planet.

The guideline is still standing. Every steroid hormone your body produces starts with it. Vitamin D depends on it. Your brain contains enormous amounts of it. Your liver makes it around the clock and when you eat less of it the liver simply produces more to compensate.

That is not the behavior of a poison. That is the behavior of something your body considers so essential it will not leave the supply to chance.

So how did we end up here? How did a substance your body goes to extraordinary lengths to maintain become the villain in the story of your health?

Follow the money.

Statins are among the most prescribed drugs in human history. Billions of dollars a year. Tens of millions of people taking them daily, many for the rest of their lives.

The business model depends entirely on cholesterol remaining the enemy.

The moment the narrative shifts the revenue shifts with it.

I am not telling you statins never save lives. They do, in specific high-risk populations, in specific circumstances. Medication saves lives. That is not the debate.

The debate is whether the cholesterol narrative you have been handed is accurate or whether it was shaped by the people who profit most from your fear of it.

The original research linking dietary cholesterol to heart disease has been challenged, walked back, and in some cases retracted.

The countries with the highest cholesterol consumption do not have the highest rates of heart disease.

The relationship between LDL numbers and cardiovascular outcomes is far more complicated than a single number on a lab report suggests.

Researchers who have raised these questions have been ignored, dismissed, and in some cases had their careers threatened.

None of that made the evening news. The statin commercials did.

Your doctor is not lying to you. Your doctor was trained inside a system that adopted the cholesterol hypothesis decades ago and built its entire cardiovascular treatment infrastructure around it.

Changing that infrastructure is not a medical question. It is an economic and institutional one. And institutions do not dismantle themselves because the science got complicated.

I reversed type 2 diabetes at 55. Lost 98 pounds. Avoided seven surgeries. Have taken no medications in nineteen years.

Nobody in my medical team suggested any of that was possible.

I stopped outsourcing my health to a system with a financial stake in my ongoing dependency and started paying attention to what my body actually responded to.

Your body makes cholesterol every single day because it needs it every single day.

That is not a conspiracy theory. That is biology.

Maybe the question was never whether cholesterol is dangerous.

Maybe the question is who profits from you believing it is.

If you are currently taking statins or managing cardiovascular risk talk to your doctor before making any changes. Not because they had better willpower than you. Because snacking did not exist.

There was no mid-morning snack. No afternoon energy bar. No flavored yogurt to get you through to dinner.

The concept of eating between meals was not part of the culture because nobody had invented it yet.

Then the 1970s arrived. And with them, an industry.

Here is what happens inside your body every time you eat. Insulin rises. That is not a problem — insulin is how your body processes food.

But elevated insulin means one very specific thing. Your body is in fat storage mode. It is taking what you just ate and deciding what to do with it, and while that process is happening you are not burning fat. You cannot. The two states are mutually exclusive.

When you eat three meals with long stretches of nothing in between, insulin rises and falls. Rises and falls. Your body gets the signal to store, and then it gets the signal to burn. That is how human metabolism was designed to work across hundreds of thousands of years of evolution.

When you eat eight small meals throughout the day — or six, or five, or three meals plus snacks — insulin never really comes back down. You stay in storage mode. All day. Every day. Your body never gets the sustained signal to burn what it stored because you keep giving it something new to process.

The snack industry did not stumble onto this accidentally. It engineered it.

The food industry looked at three meals a day and saw a problem. Not your problem. Their problem.

Three meals a day is a closed market. There are only so many breakfast cereals and lunch options and dinner ingredients you can sell.

But if you can convince people they need to eat between meals — that skipping the mid-morning snack will tank their energy, destroy their focus, slow their metabolism — you have just created an entirely new category of product with an entirely new revenue stream.

So they marketed snacking as healthy. Essential. The responsible thing to do for your energy levels and your metabolism.

They funded studies that supported their conclusions. They put their products in school vending machines and hospital cafeterias and airport terminals. They made not snacking feel irresponsible.

And then they sold you the solution to the problem they created.

The same company that makes the sugary breakfast cereal very often also makes the mid-morning snack bar and the afternoon energy drink. It is a closed loop and it is enormously profitable.

You are not a customer they are trying to make healthier. You are a revenue stream they are trying to keep open all day long.

I eat two meals a day. Sometimes one. I am 72 years old, I have no metabolic disease, I take no medications, and I teach movement classes daily. I am not hungry between meals because my body has learned to access its own stored energy the way it was designed to.

That did not happen because I have unusual discipline. It happened because I stopped eating on the schedule the food industry invented and started eating on the schedule my body was built for.

Three meals. Long stretches of nothing. Let insulin come down. Let your body burn what it stored before you give it something new to store.

That is not a diet. That is not a protocol. That is just how human metabolism works when you stop letting an industry that profits from your hunger tell you when to eat.

The Couch Didn’t Fix It. Not the clinical kind that gets a diagnosis and a prescription. The quieter kind. The low hum of fear that shows up uninvited, colors ordinary moments, and convinces you that something is wrong even when everything is fine.

At 72, medication free for seventeen years, having reversed a diabetes diagnosis and avoided seven surgeries — the anxiety is still there sometimes. Not as loud. Not as frequent. But there.

Nobody tells you that part. The health transformation story is supposed to end with everything fixed. The weight gone, the blood sugar normal, the body rebuilt — and peace arriving along with it.

The peace took longer. And it didn’t come from where the system said it would.

About ten years ago, already well into the health journey, the decision was made to try therapy. Telehealth. A therapist on a screen. Weeks of sessions that never quite felt like they were going anywhere. Strange childhood memories surfaced that couldn’t be verified as real or imagined. A theory that never fully made sense. And at the end of it — not better. Just confused about things that had been perfectly unexamined before.

The last appointment was the first one in person. By then it was already clear that something about the whole dynamic was off.

That experience isn’t unique. A lot of people have sat in that room — or stared at that screen — and walked out wondering why talking about their feelings was supposed to change how they felt. The mental health industry has a confident answer for that question. The answer involves more sessions.

The rest of this piece is for paid members — what actually works, the specific tools that moved the needle when therapy didn’t, and the fortress philosophy applied to the mind.

No rock bottom. No morning we woke up and made a solemn resolution. No dramatic conversation between Peggy and me about what alcohol was doing to our lives.

One day we just noticed we had stopped.

A glass of wine with dinner had been part of our life for years. I enjoyed a scotch. Peggy liked her wine. Nothing excessive. Nothing that looked like a problem from the outside. Just the quiet background presence of alcohol that most people over 50 would recognize immediately.

And then somewhere in the process of rebuilding our health — the daily movement, the real food, the sleep we started protecting like it mattered — the craving just disappeared. Not dramatically. Not all at once. It faded the way a habit fades when your body no longer needs what it was getting from it.

We did not decide to quit. Our bodies decided for us.

I have thought about that a lot since. Because what it tells me is something the wellness industry will never put on a label and the alcohol industry will spend billions making sure you never hear.

Your body does not actually want alcohol. It wants what alcohol pretends to offer. Relaxation. Relief. A boundary between the stress of the day and the peace of the evening. When you build a body and a life that provides those things directly — through movement, through real food, through sleep that actually restores — the alcohol becomes unnecessary. Not forbidden. Not resisted. Just unnecessary.

That is a completely different relationship with drinking than the one most people have.

Most people manage their drinking. They set limits. They take breaks. They do dry January and feel virtuous and go back to the glass of wine on February first because nothing underneath actually changed. The craving was still there. They just white-knuckled their way past it for thirty days.

We did not manage anything. We just got healthy enough that the craving stopped showing up.

Here is what the research actually says about alcohol that the wine-with-dinner crowd does not want to hear. There is no safe level. The heart healthy red wine story that dominated health headlines for two decades has been largely dismantled. The studies it was based on had serious flaws. People who drink moderately tend to have other healthy habits that explained the outcomes, not the wine. When researchers controlled for those factors the cardiovascular benefit of alcohol disappeared.

What did not disappear was the risk. Alcohol is a Group 1 carcinogen. The same category as tobacco and asbestos. It raises the risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, colon, and breast. It disrupts sleep architecture even in small amounts — you may fall asleep faster but you will not sleep as deeply or restore as fully. It raises cortisol. It impairs the body’s ability to recover from exercise. It taxes the liver with every single drink regardless of how moderate the drinking is.

None of that makes you a bad person for having a glass of wine. It makes you someone who deserves accurate information instead of a cultural narrative built around making alcohol seem benign.

Peggy went through four rounds of chemotherapy last year (originally scheduled for 6). Large tumor. Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. She was declared cancer free after session three and her oncologist was surprised by how well her body handled treatment. We were not surprised. Seventeen years of daily movement and real food had built a body with reserves the system did not expect.

I think about alcohol in that context now. Every drink is a small tax on the fortress. Every disrupted night of sleep, every cortisol spike, every demand on the liver — none of it catastrophic in isolation, all of it erosive over time. The fortress is built in daily decisions. It is also quietly dismantled in them.

Our bodies knew that before we did. They just stopped asking for something that was working against everything we were trying to build.

I am not telling you to quit drinking. That is your decision and your body. But I am telling you that the version of alcohol you have been sold — the heart healthy wine, the well-deserved scotch, the harmless social lubricant — is not the full picture.

And I am telling you that when you treat your body well enough for long enough something remarkable happens. It starts making better decisions on its own.

You might be surprised what it stops asking for.

You Already Know what You The trainers. The self-proclaimed experts with their new discoveries and their proprietary systems and their vocabulary designed to make you feel like you need a translator just to understand your own body.

Every week there is a new one. A new framework. A new protocol. A new study that overturns everything you thought you knew and conveniently requires you to buy something to implement it.

I am tired of it. And I think you are too.

Here is the truth the entire industry is built around hiding from you.

You already know.

You know you need to move your body every day. You know real food is better than processed food. You know sleep matters. You know stress is killing you slowly. You know the couch is not the answer even when it feels like it is.

You have always known. You knew it before the last guru told you about their method. You knew it before the study that changed everything. You knew it before the influencer with the perfect body and the supplement stack explained why their specific approach is the one that finally works.

The complexity is not enlightenment. The complexity is the product.

If you understand everything about your body already the experts have nothing to sell you. So the experts keep discovering new things. Keep developing new systems. Keep finding new ways to make simple biology sound like something that requires their guidance to navigate.

It has been going on my entire career and it is getting worse.

I reversed type 2 diabetes at 55. Lost 98 pounds. Avoided seven surgeries through movement. Have taken no medications in nineteen years. None of that required a guru. None of it required a protocol or a proprietary system or a vocabulary I had to learn before I could begin.

It required moving my body every day. Eating real food. Sleeping. Managing stress. Repeating.

That is the whole thing. That has always been the whole thing.

Peggy taught fitness classes through cancer treatment and came out the other side with her oncologist shaking her head in surprise. Not because we had found the right expert. Because seventeen years of simple daily decisions had built something extraordinary out of completely ordinary choices.

Move. Eat real food. Sleep. Repeat.

At RiversZen that is all we have ever taught. No discoveries. No proprietary methods. No vocabulary designed to make you feel behind until you buy the next thing. Just people who move together every day and invite you to join them.

Want some friends to stretch with? We are here.

But first — stop listening to everyone telling you what you are doing wrong. Stop chasing the next discovery. Stop letting the complexity convince you that you are somehow behind.

You are not behind. You are not missing something. You are not one more expert away from finally understanding your own body.

You already know.

Start there.

Your Dermatologist Is thousand die from skin cancer.

Read those numbers again.

Now ask yourself why the medical profession’s loudest voice on sunlight belongs to dermatology.

Joe Rogan asked that question recently. He was talking to a researcher who studies the full spectrum of what sunlight does to the human body, not just what it does to skin. The conversation was straightforward. Does sun exposure improve cardiovascular health and lower blood pressure?

The researcher’s answer was equally straightforward. Yes. The studies show it does. Sunlight moves the needle on cardiovascular outcomes. And cardiovascular disease kills twenty million people a year. Anything that affects those numbers matters.

Rogan’s follow-up was the one that landed. Are dermatologists willing to have that conversation?

The researcher’s answer: they don’t want to look outside of the sun and skin cancer question. They are not willing to entertain any of the other benefits that fall outside their field.

Rogan called it what it is. That seems so ignorant.

He is right. But ignorance is not actually the problem. Incentive is.

Dermatology is built around one relationship — sunlight and skin. That is the specialty. That is the training. That is the billing infrastructure. There is no mechanism inside dermatology to recommend sunlight for cardiovascular health because cardiovascular health is not their department. And there is certainly no financial incentive to tell patients that something free and available to everyone might move the needle on the number one killer in the world.

So they don’t.

They tell you to wear sunscreen. Stay covered. Avoid peak hours. Minimize exposure. All of it organized around the 128,000 deaths from skin cancer while the 20,500,000 cardiovascular deaths go unaddressed by the one specialty loudest about sun exposure.

This is not a conspiracy. It is a specialty system doing exactly what specialty systems do — staying inside their lane while the bigger picture goes unexamined by anyone with the authority to examine it.

Your cardiologist is not telling you to get more sunlight. Your dermatologist is telling you to avoid it. And nobody in the room is looking at both numbers at the same time and asking the obvious question.

Until now.

The question is not whether sunlight causes skin cancer. It does, under certain conditions, for certain people. That is real and worth managing intelligently.

The question is whether the medical establishment has given you an accurate picture of the full relationship between sunlight and your health. And the answer to that question is clearly no.

Twenty million five hundred thousand versus one hundred and twenty eight thousand.

Your body was designed to be outside. In the sun. Moving. That is not a wellness influencer’s opinion. That is evolutionary biology.

The systems that regulate your blood pressure, your mood, your sleep, your immune function — all of them were built around regular sun exposure over hundreds of thousands of years.

The dermatologist’s advice is not wrong about skin cancer. It is simply incomplete about everything else.

Get outside. Move your body in natural light. Manage your exposure intelligently without pretending the sun is only a threat.

Your cardiovascular system will thank you in ways your dermatologist never mentioned.

The Second Declaration

Two hundred and fifty years ago, a group of men sat down and did something that They studied what was happening, concluded it was no longer acceptable, and chose a different path at considerable personal risk.

Most Americans will spend this July 4th weekend barbecuing and watching fireworks without ever applying that moment to their own lives. Which is exactly what the system is counting on.

I want to talk about a different kind of declaration. One that does not require muskets or a continental congress. One that happens in your kitchen, your living room, your backyard, your body. One that is available to you right now, today, regardless of your age, your diagnosis, or how long you have been handing control to people who profit from keeping you dependent.

This is the declaration nobody teaches you to make. And it may be the most important one of your life.

The system the founders broke from had a specific structure. It collected resources without consent. It made decisions without accountability. It maintained its power by keeping the colonies dependent — dependent on British goods, British law, British identity. The moment the colonies could imagine existing without that system, the system’s power began to collapse.

I am not comparing the British crown to your cardiologist. Your doctor is not a villain. The people inside the American healthcare system are largely good people doing difficult work inside a structure that was not designed around your independence. It was designed around your return visits.

Think about how the system actually works. You have a problem. You go to an appointment. Fifteen minutes if you are lucky. The physician has a list of tools available — tests, referrals, procedures, prescriptions. The tools that get reimbursed are the tools that get used. There is no billing code for telling a patient to walk thirty minutes a day and cut out processed food. There is no margin in contracted stretching. There is no revenue in sleep. The system does not reward independence. It rewards dependency, return visits, and ongoing management.

That is not a conspiracy. It is an incentive structure. And incentive structures shape behavior whether anyone intends them to or not.

What happens when you finally stop outsourcing your body to that system — and what Peggy’s cancer diagnosis revealed about seventeen years of daily decisions — is what members read next. This is exactly the kind of conversation your membership unlocks every single Sunday. If you are not yet a member, today is a good day to change that.

That you are not too old. That the damage is not permanent and the trajectory is not fixed. That the next chapter has not already been written by a system that benefits from writing it for you.

I made that decision at 55. Facing surgeries on both feet, my knee, my back, my shoulder. Type 2 diabetic. Carrying 98 extra pounds. The system had a thorough plan for me and not one piece of it involved me getting better.

I got better anyway.

Nineteen years. No medications. No surgeries. Teaching movement classes daily at 72.

Peggy taught fitness classes through six rounds of chemotherapy and was declared cancer free after session three. Her oncologist was surprised. We were not. Seventeen years of daily decisions had built something that held when it needed to.

That is what a declaration looks like in practice. Not a single dramatic moment. Thousands of ordinary ones. Every meal. Every walk. Every morning you choose to move when the couch is right there waiting.

Today is July 4th. The fireworks are nice.

But the most important declaration you will make this weekend has nothing to do with 1776.

It has to do with what you decide about your own body. Your own health. Your own future.

That decision is yours. Nobody can make it for you. Nobody can take it from you either.

Make it today.

Tomorrow Everyone Celebrates Freedom. Flags. Backyard gatherings and the smell of something on the grill and the particular feeling that comes with a holiday built around a single enormous idea.

Freedom.

Two hundred and fifty years of it. The most celebrated political achievement in human history marked every year with the kind of collective joy that reminds you why the experiment was worth attempting in the first place.

And then Monday arrives and most people walk straight back into the systems controlling their lives without a second thought.

Not political systems. Personal ones.

The system that told you your cholesterol number means you need a prescription for the rest of your life. The system that invented snacking and convinced you that eating between meals is responsible. The system that told you the joint pain is just aging and the surgery is inevitable and the slowdown is coming for everyone so you might as well get comfortable with it.

The system that told you a glass of red wine was good for your heart while the research it was based on was comparing sick people to less sick people and calling it science.

These are not small things. They are the invisible walls of a different kind of dependency. One that does not look like dependency because everyone around you is inside the same walls and nobody is calling it captivity.

The founders did not accept the arrangement they were born into. They looked at it clearly, named what it was doing to them, and decided it was no longer acceptable.

That is available to you too. Not just tomorrow. Today.

What are you still accepting about your health that you have never actually examined? What has the system told you is inevitable that you have never questioned? What prescription, what diagnosis, what story about your age or your body or your genetics have you been carrying because someone in a position of authority handed it to you and you never thought to hand it back?

I was 55 years old with a body the system had already written the next chapter for. Seven surgeries. A lifetime of medications. A managed decline that everyone around me accepted as normal because it was normal. Because most people were on the same road.

I got off the road.

Tomorrow is July 4th. Two hundred and fifty years of a declaration that started with people deciding the arrangement was no longer acceptable.

Today is a good time to think about yours.

What Your Body Has Been Waiting to Hear

I spent seventeen years being grateful for something most people Not success. Not any of the things the world tells you to chase.

My body.

At 55 it was failing in every direction at once. Type 2 diabetes. An extra 98 pounds. Surgical candidates stacking up like a waiting room nobody wanted to sit in. I had spent decades ignoring what my body was telling me, feeding it the wrong things, moving it too little, asking it to keep performing while giving it nothing worth performing on.

And then I changed. And my body responded.

That is the part that still stops me nineteen years later. Not that I changed. That my body responded. After everything I had put it through, after all the years of neglect and poor decisions and looking the other way, it was still willing to meet me where I was and move forward.

That is not nothing. That is extraordinary.

People over 50 are told constantly that the damage is done. That the window has closed. That the body they have now is a diminished version of something they had decades ago and the best they can do is manage the decline. The system is built around that story because a body you believe is beyond repair is a body that stays dependent.

It is also a lie.

The human body does not care how long you waited. It cares what you do today. Every meal, every walk, every night of real sleep — your body registers all of it and responds accordingly. Not on your timeline. Not dramatically. But consistently, faithfully, without judgment for the years you spent doing it wrong.

Peggy was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma seven months ago. Large tumor. Six rounds of chemotherapy. The kind of diagnosis that makes you take stock of everything.

Her body handled it in a way that surprised her oncologist. The tumor cleared after the first session. She was declared cancer free after session three. She never stopped teaching classes. Never stopped moving. Her body had reserves the system did not expect because the system did not know what seventeen years of daily movement and real food had built.

After treatment ended Peggy said something that stayed with me. She said she never felt abandoned by her body. Even in the hardest moments of treatment she felt like her body was fighting alongside her rather than against her.

That is what gratitude for your body actually produces. Not a feeling. A relationship. A body that has been cared for consistently shows up differently in a crisis than one that has been neglected and medicated and asked to perform without being given anything to work with.

You may have spent years giving your body very little. Most people have. The system made it easy to outsource the decisions and ignore the signals and keep moving through life treating your body like a vehicle you never bothered to maintain.

It does not matter. Your body is not keeping score the way you think it is. It is not withholding its best efforts because you waited too long or started too late or have more years of neglect behind you than you are comfortable admitting.

It is waiting for you to show up.

Start today. Not Monday. Not after the holiday. Today. One walk. One real meal. One night of protected sleep. Your body will register it. And it will respond.

Nineteen years of evidence tells me so.

The System Had a Plan for Me

At 55 years old I Surgeries on both feet. My right knee. My lower back. My shoulder. A possible hip replacement. Prescriptions to manage the type 2 diabetes that had taken up residence in my body along with an extra 98 pounds.

It was a thorough plan. Professional. Well intentioned. And completely organized around keeping me dependent on the system that built it.

I rejected it.

Not because I am reckless. Not because I distrust doctors. But because I looked at that plan and understood something nobody in that office was going to tell me. There was no exit ramp. No point at which the plan concluded with me no longer needing the plan. It was designed to manage my conditions indefinitely. And indefinitely is a very long time to hand your body to a system that profits from your return visits.

Nineteen years later I take no medications. The surgeries never happened. I teach movement classes daily at 72 and I feel better than I did the day I sat in that office.

The system did not give me that. I took it.

Here is what I have learned in nineteen years that nobody inside that system will tell you. The system is not designed around your independence. It is designed around your dependency. Not out of malice. Out of incentive. There is no billing code for reversing type 2 diabetes through food and movement. There is no margin in teaching someone contracted stretching instead of scheduling surgery. There is no revenue in a patient who no longer needs to be a patient.

The system rewards what it can charge for. And it cannot charge for you getting better on your own terms.

That does not make your doctor a villain. It makes the structure a problem. And the structure will never fix itself because the structure is working exactly as designed — for everyone except you.

Your body is not a condition to be managed. It is a fortress to be built. And the building happens in decisions the system will never prescribe — the food you choose, the way you move every day, the sleep you protect, the stress you refuse to carry indefinitely.

Nobody is coming to hand you your independence. The system is not going to offer you a better arrangement. The exit ramp does not appear on their map because their map was never drawn with your exit in mind.

You have to draw your own.

I did it at 55 with a body that was falling apart and a system that had already written the next chapter for me. If I could do it then, you can do it now. Whatever your age. Whatever your diagnosis. Whatever plan the system has already built for you.

Your body is waiting for you to take it back.

The Day I Realized I Was I do not even remember what it was for. There was a box for age and I wrote seventy-two the way I have written it for months now without thinking twice. And then somewhere below that box was a category. Senior citizen.

I looked at it for a long moment.

Senior citizen. That phrase belongs to someone else. Someone slower. Someone careful. Someone who has settled into a smaller version of life because a larger one is no longer available to them. I have a picture of that person in my head, the way everyone does, built from a lifetime of cultural shorthand — the early bird dinner, the cardigan, the careful walk, the conversation that circles back to medications and doctor’s appointments.

That is not who filled out the form.

I had taught two movement classes that morning. I had done my contracted stretching before either of them. I felt, if anything, better than I had felt at fifty. Stronger in places that used to ache. Clearer in a way that surprised me when I let myself notice it. The body sitting at that table did not match the box it had just checked.

It was a strange few seconds. Not upsetting exactly. Not a crisis. Just a genuine disconnect between a number and an experience, sitting side by side and refusing to agree with each other.

I think about how differently this moment would have gone seventeen years earlier. At fifty-five I was the version of old the form was describing. Type 2 diabetic. Ninety eight pounds heavier than I needed to be. Facing a surgical schedule that would have made the word senior feel accurate in every sense the culture intends it. If I had filled out that same form back then the category would have fit. Maybe even arrived early.

It does not fit now. And I am still trying to understand exactly why that strikes me as strange rather than triumphant.

I think it is because the label was never really about a number in the first place. Senior citizen, as the culture uses it, is shorthand for a set of assumptions about capability, energy, and possibility. It assumes a trajectory. A decline that started somewhere in the fifties or sixties and has been quietly compounding ever since, regardless of what any individual person actually did with their daily life.

I did not follow that trajectory. I left it at fifty-five and built something else instead. And nineteen years later the label the culture hands out based on a birth date simply does not describe the person who is living inside this body.

I am not writing this to tell you that age is just a number, the way a coffee mug might. That phrase has been worn smooth by overuse until it barely means anything. I am seventy-two years old. That is a real number describing a real amount of time I have been alive, and I am not interested in pretending otherwise.

What I am saying is something quieter and harder to put on a coffee mug. The number describes how long you have been alive. It does not describe what you built while you were here. Those are two completely different things and the culture has spent decades treating them as if they were the same.

I sat with that form for a moment longer than I needed to. Then I checked the box, because the box was technically accurate, and went back to teaching my afternoon class.

But the thought stayed with me the rest of the day. The strange experience of being handed a label that was true and inaccurate at the same time. True about the years. Inaccurate about everything the years were supposed to mean.

I do not know exactly what to do with that thought yet. I am still turning it over.

I just know it is worth telling you about.
